I will keep a list of the questions as I get them and answer them the best I can, or direct you to other designers who have answered them....
Q: When you direct your inquiries to fabric companies, is it the art director that you want to locate or someone else to send your proposal to?
A: Sometimes companies will be very clear about submissions, and others not so much. I would just send the company an email, and ask who you should be directed to for submissions. They usually respond and will point you in the right direction.
Q: How do you develop a color palette?
A: I collect colors. I look at paintings, old illustrations, fresh produce, a lot of nature though, and then I go to the mattresses and by that I mean, Pantone. I use the Pantone Solid Coated Book, but I am willing to find color just about anywhere... I just match it back to these colors. The back and forth of the screen to the printer can be gross, so just find a screen and a printer that you can trust
Q: Any advice for developing a line?
A: I try and look for a need, first. But as far as ideas go.. I do a lot of word association. I am always trying to be really clever, I am not always... but sometimes it works out. Sooo,
- fill a need
- brainstorm (gross... brain+storm)
- pick something
- work it to death
- leave it alone
- come back to it
- edit
- rework
- finalize
How's that for development?
