Christmas in Europe!

Hiya peeps!

I just got back a couple of days ago and wanted to share some of our trip. We started in Amsterdam, which was really so great, then we took a train down to Brugge, Belgium, and then we ended the trip in Paris. I am really grateful that I got to spend that time with my little sister Melissa, and one of my best friends, Jessica. I also had a lot of time to think while I was there. I feel like I got some clarity and a bit of perspective that I could not have gotten otherwise. A Christmas miracle.

I hope that everyone had a great holiday, and that you all have a Happy New Year. I'm actually really excited for this year, last year I think I was a little fearful, but this year, I'm ready! Cheers to all of you!

Change in Surprise...

So I couldn't get to Japan. All of the flights were oversold and out of control. 

FROWNY FACE EMOTICON TIMES 15,000,000,000. 

But the good news is... I leave for Amsterdam in an a couple of hours. We'll start in Amsterdam, and head down to Belgium for a couple of days, and end up in Paris. It's not Japan, but it is Europe! We'll be in Bruges for Christmas and my feelings aren't hurt about that...

So you are thinking of getting a printing press

I thought this might be useful to some peeps. It was an email that I got. 

Dear Lizzy,

I'm interested in producing large and small linoleum block prints. Where can I find information of purchasing a press?

I would like to produce prints up to around 20" x 24" and as small at 8" x 10"

Hi

I work in a lab, so we have a couple different presses. One of which is a Takach small etching press that is convertible for relief printing, and the other is an old Conrad press. The Conrad is larger but the Takach is a little nicer. Both types of presses start at about $5000. If you were just going to get a press for home use, or small quantities of printing you might look on Daniel Smith, or DickBlick. They have smaller table top presses. The bottom line is that presses are expensive, but if you are going to be selling bodies of work then it will surely pay for itself. 

With block printing you don't have to have a press to print, but the results are a lot less varied and easier to edition when you have a control (the press) in the pressure.

Another option, depending on where you live, is to see if there is a local college, or art center or something to that effect that would be willing to let you print on their press. Sometimes they will charge you a lab fee, but it might be more cost effective than buying a press...

Surprise!

Surprise! I'm going to Japan tomorrow! I'm going with my little sister, Melissa, and our best friend Jessica. We have some really great friends who live out there now, and we are really excited to see them. Plus, I can't wait to go shopping!

Graduation!

Friday was pretty weird. We graduated! We did it, did it in a minute! It just felt really weird though, but I am glad that I ended up walking because it only lasted about 45 minutes and it gave me a little closure to the whole school thing... I think

A couple of my professors had agreed when they were going to read my name, instead of saying "Elizabeth House," they decided they were going to say "Lizzy Dish," but all that Franson got out was, "Elizabeth Lizzy...House". They all thought it was so funny. 

After Graduation we had a "fancy" party in the Printmaking Lab, where all fancy parties in Rexburg are held. It was a good night. 

ps. that is just my scarf, not a chord or an honors thing...

oh, and I'm graduated, in case you forgot...

So today is the day. I will graduate today with a BFA in Printmaking from BYU-Idaho. I thought this day would never come, and here it is.

Have you Gmail peeps seen the new theme options? You can change the background and color of your gmail account. I went for the "Tea House" option. The little fox duder is always doing something, and the sun moves with the time of day. I am always amused with him.

Another thing. A little while back I did some gocco prints for the PikaProject. I knew that I would be really busy for the past month, so I did them a month in advance (October)! Amazing! Here is the deal though... I didn't even really know what gocco was. I kept reading about every one loving, and saving, and bidding, and neglecting and or and crying over gocco, but I just didn't actually know what it was. Enter Ben, Steed Griffin. The inventor of Gocco in the State of Idaho. If not the state of Idaho, then most assuredly Eastern Idaho.

He graciously let me use his, and all the stuff to boot. Which is saying a lot as they are such precious commodities these days. Plus his gocco printing is extreme. He was even featured of NotCot.org. Which is sweet action.

As far as me and gocco are concerned now... I dream of having one of my own, a large format one, and an endless heap of supplies. I really enjoyed using it. Wow! a real dream machine. So much art so quickly. It is a nice change of pace from Intaglio printmaking...
