primary colors

this has been an interesting week, and it's only half over.

Monday was really a dream come true. My new FAVORITE band, for whatever reason, came to town. I always preface with, "for whatever reason," as Rexburg is not near anything, and therefore very out of the way. The band is called Canoe, and they are from Portland Oregon. I first heard of them a couple of months ago, through a friend, and had been listening to the same five songs over and over again, because I loved them so much, and it's all I had. I even put them on mix cds for the print lab. Well, needless to say they put on an amazing show. I love when a band sounds just as good if not better than their recording.

Also, a band that is a part of their label played. Johan the Angel. They were incredible! Please go listen! You can listen to the music, and buy it from their website or through Amazon MP3, once you know just how much you love them too.

Tuesday: a play, sorbet, and super smash brothers

Wednesday: we are getting ready for a print show they are doing in Idaho Falls, and we all (printing peeps) have work in the show, and getting all the images together, framed, matted... it's all little stressful on top of everything else, but it's a great opportunity. So, for various reasons it was a rough day. BUT I just can't even imagine how, but everyday like this I come home to some kind of present! Somehow, someone knows that I needed something. It's a miracle!

I designed a wedding announcement for some dear friends of mine, and I did it because I love them, but they got me a present. On Monday at the show, I told my friend Preston how beautiful I thought these bells that Johan the Angel were playing, and he said that he knew all about them.

I came home tonight to a set of these, and a sweet note from someone. How does someone always know?

a brief history.

i won't even show the earlier ones. October is as far as I am willing to go. It just goes to show that my Mom's quilts are amazing, and my press releases are improving... thanks to everyone for your support.

Today I woke up really early to take the photos for Cherry Fizz. I planned out the shoot Thursday and Friday and then shot this morning! My lovely model was Isabelle Jimison. She is actually quite the photographer, but was kind enough to let me take her picture. She was a really great sport, and very photogenic. Hooray for Izze, and the new patterns completion.

here is a new print that I am working on. It is a dry point, like this and this... and for some reason my plates always end up about the same size... tall and skinny. I don't have a title for this piece yet. I will finish printing the edition this week.

international cinema

Last night was the FIRST International Cinema, at BYU-Idaho! I have been wanting this to happen for a long time, as BYU has always had an International Cinema. So, needless to say I was very excited, and a little bit nervous. I didn't have any idea how the turn out would be... my three printmaking peeps thought it would just be us there, but to my surprise, as Mallori and I walked down to the basement, we heard a muffled noise, and as we opened the door to the Theatre, it was completely full. We were taken aback!!! It was actually really exciting. We watched the Iranian movie, The Color of Paradise. If you have not seen it, I strongly recommend it. Something that was equally encouraging was the response, to not only the film but the overall cinema. People were coming up and thanking the professors in charge for doing this. That makes it seem like a cry for something better, and I am glad to be a part of it (I hang up the posters, start and stop the movie...) It was a really nice night, followed by good cheesecake and great conversation. I love a little culture in Rexburg.

short.

the past couple of days I have felt really short. I am not all that short...but not all that tall. I would say that 5'4 is about normal, but I have felt so small. I can't seem to reach anything. I am always standing on the counters in the printmaking studio... which I don't actually mind, because I like standing on the counter. I haven't been carrying anything over sized that would make me seem smaller... it's a funny feeling, the idea of being closer to the ground than usual.

i've also been so short on time. I am trying to figure out how I am really supposed to get everything done (art work, school work, work work), and still be some what present in the rest of my life... I am very interested to know how so many of you had time to date and get married... I can't even remember to eat lunch, let alone fix my hair. lets be honest...not much to fix...

i decided to be more of an advocate for a handmade lifestyle and in doing so I have been printing my own end papers for my books instead of purchasing paper. I will definitely use the paper I already have, and buy some if it is really something that I couldn't make. I start by carving linolium blocks, choosing the colors and then I print them on paper (maybe some fabric). This particular pattern is three different blocks, and it is based on a Saul Bass design that I really love. I have however adapted it to my own travels...

tonight I made a book using the paper, and I gave a sheet of it to one of my friends for her birthday and she has already made a beautiful book using it as well. This is just one color way, and there are four more... and just so you can have an idea of the process: each sheet has 48 passes under the press, so that means inking the block 48 times as well, with 3 different colors, and there are 5 sheets in each color way. That is 480 actions for each set!

I hope everyone had a good day. I myself care very little for Valentines. At least this year there was very little that made me nauseous.
