Wee Play with Fabric - fabric and free pattern giveaway!

A week or so ago my LQS was having their semi-annual sale, which I love, love, love!  This is best time to stock up on fabrics for quilt backs since 100's of bolts are marked down by 60%.  My favorite fabric to purchase for quilt backs is Moda's silky soft fabric...it must be made of clouds or something...how do they get it so soft? 

So I'm standing there having a bunch of fabric cut, and one of the employees brings in a stack of charm packs, and said that they had forgot them, and that they needed to be added to the sale.  Well being the piglet that I am, I bought them all...all four of them.  It's really okay, there wasn't anyone else around wanting them - I totally would have shared. It's not like I got in a fist fight over them, or stepped on someone's toe or something...I save that kind of behavior for the 70% off sale...just kidding :-)  BUT...I did buy all four, and I do feel a little selfish, so to make amends to the quilting world at large, I'm going to give one away!  Not only that, I've created a quilt pattern to go along with the fabric.  That should square me with the fabric gods, right???

Something to try...Dale Fleming's 6 Minute Circle

Love circles?  If you haven't tried Dale Fleming's 6 Minute Circle, I can't recommend it highly enough.  I Do!, Baby, I Do, and Lizzy's Marble Champ...all circle quilts, all made using this terrific method.  I'm working on a new pattern with double circles, and this is the ONLY method for me...check it out!

Playing fast and loose with value!

Light, medium, and dark...quilters live by it in terms of value, right?  But I love switching things around, and taking what once was a light, or a medium light, and having it play the role of a dark.  I utilized this throughout this quilt, it helps create visual variety and unexpected surprises across the surface of the top.

The fabric is 3 Sister's Aster Manor by Moda, and the quilt will be off to the machine quilter's tomorrow.  Cherry House Quilts is starting a new series of traditional quilts called Salutations; an homage to all things beautiful and traditional like letter writing, and quilting.  This first quilt in the series is called Best Wishes.

Little Bouquet Quilt Along - It's done!!!

  

My little mini quilt is done!  I'm still working on the larger 12 block quilt, but with Quilt Market all too quickly approaching, that will have to take a back seat for a bit.  The Little Bouquet Quilt Along has been fun and enjoyable.  Some of the Type A participants have had a bit of a struggle with the letting go, and free form process of it all, but they are hanging in there, and working through it.

I am in love (again)

  Look at this beauty - I am completely in love all over again!  Let me introduce you to my newest love...his name is Benjamin Ryan Buchanan House.  My son and his wife welcomed this sweet little one (or not so little) on Monday morning.  He weighed 9 lbs 11oz, and was 22" long...big baby!  Amazingly, not as big a baby as his Daddy...but a big healthy baby with beautiful red hair. 

I got to hold him for about two hours on Monday...what a privilege!

Gotta go make this baby a quilt!

Little Bouquet Flowers - Ready to Sew!

 

Flowers made, and ready to sew!  Hey quilt along friends...where are you in the process?  Ready for the next step. 

Let's review:

• Background made, and ready
• Flowers made
• Leaves and stems
• Arrangement configured on the background
• Next...getting ready to sew!

What I have found that works best is to place the flowers on the background until you find the best composition.  After you are happy with the arrangement, take a digital pic to remember where everything is placed.  Next step is to add the prepared leaves and stems.

Carefully pin everything in place, and tack down your flowers, either by hand or by machine.  At this point sew down your flowers as desired, either machine applique, or sewing them down during the quilting process.  After that we will layer our top to create a quilt sandwich with batting, and the backing.
