Thank you for all of your sweet & kind comments about City Garden. Many of you have asked why I'm retiring this pattern - the reason, this pattern is very specific to Holly Holderman's fabric. I worry about some of the fabrics no longer being available, and someone feeling frustrated that they cannot find exactly what is called out for. That is not to say that you cannot use any fabric that you like - please do! This quilt is a variation of City Blocks, but with detailed instructions on how to achieve the watercolor effect across the quilt. Holly has the same line of fabric in a pink colorway, I've always been interested in how the quilt would look in pink. If someone gives it a try, let me know; I'd love to see it.
Okay...ready for the question, and the need for the "food for thought"? As a quilt/pattern designer I am truly seeking your opinion.
Which camp do you fall into:
- You purchase a pattern and fabric to create the exact quilt the designer created
- You purchase a pattern, and use fabric from your stash
- You purchase a pattern, use the designer's "vision", purchase key fabrics, but also pull from your stash
- You buy the pattern for inspiration and general guidelines, but do your own thing
- Or some other variation
Also...
If you bought a pattern to create a specific quilt, but could not find the exact fabric would you:
- Make the quilt, but substitute where necessary
- Throw in the towel, because it wouldn't be "exactly" the same
These are important issues, and considerations for quilters and designers alike. Often I've heard from quilters that they become REALLY frustrated because they have to search all over the country to find the exact fabric the designer has specified. I think this is an important dialog that designers and quilters need to have.
Well, I hope you will take a moment and share your feelings about this fabric/pattern issue.
Okay...back to cheery subjects! Submit a comment here for the free City Garden pattern drawing. I'll pick the winners on Wednesday.
