Give me a 6" sq ruler, a few yards of lightweight non-fusible, non-woven interfacing (NFNWI), a bag of scraps, and I can do anything! These have to be my all time favorite quilting supplies. I'm not sure about anyone else - but I NEED mindless sewing projects. I need to be able to lose myself without having to tax my brain too much. This is my favorite activity when I just need to create - or use up several piles of scraps, but can't think too hard about it...
- Rough cut 7" squares from the NFNWI - nothing exact, it will all be trimmed later
- Gather lots of strip scraps (don't say that too fast) sort by theme, color, etc - I use anything from 3/4" to 2"
- Prep lots of bobbins - I use neutral color thread - beige or gray depending on the fabric
- Have your trusty iron by your side - you'll need it
- Go to town, sew - flip - press - sew - flip - press, keep repeating...if you're lucky, you might actually use up some of your scraps
- When you've covered the entire block of interfacing with the strips, trim with the 6" ruler, and presto, whamo - magic!
Sew these together in a basket weave pattern - as many or as few as you like. Using them as a background for applique works really well too.
Pretty, Cherri! I really love a nice patchwork as a background for applique; that's one of my favorite new (to me) techniques. Thanks for sharing your method - have a great weekend! :)
