Most quilters are probably aware of the Gee's Bend Quilts... those beautiful quilts made by hard working woman trying to keep their families warm. I've been thinking about what we create out of necessity and need. Lizzy's post about using our old school supplies while trying to create art has brought those thoughts home. There were lots of times as a young single Mom when I had four children to feed, but not much to feed them with that I would become very creative in the kitchen. Creativity was not a choice, but a necessity.
We all have an internal meter that guides us as to what is right, and what is wrong, I believe. According to my personal meter the worse crimes that can be committed are against children, the elderly, the infirm, the less fortunate, animals, etc. So when I read a recent article regarding the treatment of the Quilters of Gee's Bend, it made me a so upset. To treat those women who gave all that they had, which was very little indeed; badly, is beyond injustice. What to do? I'm not sure - but it is unacceptable, and those woman deserve better.
baby Noah!
