over the top

I met a very sweet man in Montreux. I was looking in windows of shops, and this one caught my eye. I knew that it was a bindery! and the door was open! So I went and asked if I could come in. This sweet man welcomed me in, and we established that I did not speak French, and that he in turn did not speak English. Luckily I was with Isabelle, Veronique's lovely sister, who translated for us.

Through Izzy we talked about types of binding, and general book making all over the world. In his opinion Americans and Latins make over the top flashy books, and French, German and Swiss make simple straight forward books. He said, "no one wants to let the book speak for itself. The book should speak for itself."

I agree. It's like a good meal. Really good fresh ingredients, minimal but excellent care, make for a really good meal. Same with a good book. Really quality materials, minimal but expert execution, make for a good book. Nothing over the top, the book can do all the talking

I was glad to have met him. If I was in Switzerland I could go apprentice with him. Wouldn't that be cool?

 

Squam Art Fair!

Dear Peeps,

Camp is great. Everyone is being very nice. The mosquitoes are pretty bad though... but in happier new news, this Saturday, here in beautiful New Hampshire, at the amazing Squam Art Workshop, there will be an Art Fair! Cool thing is you didn't have to attend Squam to attend the fair!

The fair will be taking place in the Deephaven Dining room, building #67 on the campus map. Have no worries about finding it as there will be lots of people (and signs) to direct you in.

There are going to be so many great artist selling their work! I have been truly amazed by my fellow teachers so it's bound to be not only inspiring, but a fun event. For Reals...

I will be selling a couple of books, and my fine art prints! I even have a stack of fabric that I think three people have claimed... we'll see who ends up with it.

If you are in the area and can come, come say hi to me! I'll just love you forever

the fifth day

I wanted to post some good close up pictures of the paper piece that I did. It was recently entered into a contest so I was revisiting it myself, I thought I would share. Again, it is called the fifth day, and it is my take on the the creation.

Everything is cut from either paper or vellum. I used different weights and types of paper to create texture and contrast, from a graphed, lined, and linen finish to a cotton rag paper. Paper is seriously one of my very favorite things on earth. The basket is woven from a combination of all the paper used and the little gift tag says, "To: Earth. Love, God". Oh, and my favorite part... the gift basket is sitting on Pangaea.

my last "student" art show.

just stopping in for a minute with some good news!

Tonight was the student art show and my peep Ben and I, to our surprise, swept it! We decided to have an envelope count every once in a while after the "ceremony".

 

I knew that Ben would do well in his categories, even though he was worried: Graphic design, and Motion design. Swept them.

But I will say this; I was a little leery about mine... I entered in Printmaking, Book arts, and Illustration. I figured my chances were pretty good for printmaking (2nd place) and book arts (1st place)...

but the shocker (and probably the upset) of the night was when they announced illustration. I received 1st place for a 3-D paper sculpture/illustration I did called The Fifth Day. I was actually a little embarrassed. They read the honorable mention, and I thought I was out then, but I kept with them, thinking that maybe I would get third... or really reaching second at best... but I truly was shocked when they called my name for my piece. It made me a little woozy. Maybe that's a weird reaction...

it really is a great show. If you happen to be in the Rexburg area in the next two weeks (anyone?), I recommend stopping by the Spori Gallery. It really is a boon to work with so many other talented artists. I think I might have been one of the only peeps who dressed up though... I just love dressing up for stuff. It was a really fun night.

I'm a Pika peep!

First. It's my Mom's birthday today! AND she is having a drawing, not for her birthday but for fall, she is giving away some sweet action Robert Kaufman fabric. So enter today. HERE. or just wish her a happy birthday! If anyone deserves it, it's her!

I think I found Amy's blog through a friend on etsy ... or maybe it was flickr ...  you know when you start clicking on peeps lists, you have no idea how you got to where you are? That was me for sure. I am glad that I did though! Because I got picked to participate in the December project!! How cool is that? I've been trying to think of what I would send in... any suggestions? Stationary? Little Books? Little Prints? Whales? Your suggestions are more than welcome.

working hard

I've been putting in extra hours the past couple of days to get everything done... doing a lot of printing for the soon to be open shop (it's my etsy store)... as well as fabric stuff, and not to mention, but Mal's birthday is tomorrow so we have a lot of cleaning to do. I wish that I had time to do a new installation. There is just soo much to do; it's crazy!

I want to know what everyone thinks about this... we went to the store last night to buy some watermelon for the party and while the girl was ringing me up I ran to get something else. Well, when I got back I had out my card, but then I saw the total. HOLY COW. My total was over $30 I had very few things... just some ingredients for these dream cupcakes... I started scanning the screen, and sure enough the watermelon was over $10.00. It was just a normal sized watermelon... actually one of the smaller ones, but it cost about $12 so we had to put it back. I bet it wasn't even an All-Star watermelon.

Are you running into outrageous produce? My biggest problem with it most of the time is that it doesn't even taste good. It's really a problem though, because we are having a summer magic themed birthday party. What's that without watermelon. I can't ever remember paying more than $5 for a watermelon. Something has to give. What do you think? Are you running into the same problems?

with great ardor!

I decided to bring back the ardor-birds that I created back in January for a print. I carved two blocks to get the job done... but what I really wanted was to do a silk screen. Unfortunately we don't have the facilities for seriography here. BOO! One day though... You should see all the colors that I tested... gross. The oil based ink that I use is great... it's just a pain to clean. But the whole thing all together was a fun project. I am for reals opening a shop in the next couple of days.

I mean it! You can hold me to it. By July 23rd (that's Wednesday) you will be able to purchase something from me... cool, right?

this is just a test print (t/p) so the registration isn't spot on... the edition is real clean!

I also took it a step further by printing the blocks on some book cloth! I was actually really excited to make books using these special birds. But know this. It is only an edition of 3. Make of that what you will. It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas. I can hardly believe it's the end of July... bless us all

happy birthday: free handmade book contest

this coming Tuesday, June 17th, is my birthday. Cool, huh? And as such I am going to do a free give away. I am turning 23 so I am going to give away 3 of my handmade books. As much as I love receiving gifts, I love giving them. No really. Read here for an explanation.
